Description
To call the Krotons the scourge of this part of the galaxy would be an understatement. For millenia they had traveled through the region's star systems, leaving a trail of destroyed civilizations in their wake. This latest planet seemed perfect for their desires.
In what scattered encounters they had had with what might be considered justice, they had been accused of destroying budding civilizations with no regard to the intelligence of the beings. In what little defense they offered, they would point out that any civilization that passed their tests would be left alone for eternity.
This may have been true, but there was no way to know for sure. The tests involved sending two of their kind, in the form of the dominant species to the planet, alone and with little contact. If the civilization passed their tests, the two scouts would be abandoned, the Kroton ship would leave for their next destination, and the planet would be removed from their list forever.
If the scouts were successful, the planet would be turned into a Kroton resort and game park. They would enslave the population while hoards of Krotons would flood on to the planet, hunting, killing, and eating the species to extinction, only to then move on to the next planet.
What constituted success was not clear to outsiders. The Krotons themselves would only cite their morality test: if each of their scouts could engage in consenual sex with a native (if the species was sexual, and almost all were) within the first planet day, that test was failed.
There were other tests, but rumors were that the two scouts were required disrupt the civilization so thoroughly as to put them on the brink of self-destruction. It was these rumours that put some doubt in the minds of those who might stop them; that maybe the native creatures were not actually civilized.
Transmuting into human form was nearly routine, size being the most significant difference, but there were always risks. As always, the operator monitored the process via the floating TelePresence Module.
What awaited these two was yet to be seen. They would soon be on earth, as Karl and Shae, close approximations to their names in their language.
Time would tell if they would be successful… and success would not bode well for humankind.

When I saw
NICELab's "Racks View: New Horizons" series, the evil beasts in that were very much like what I envisioned for the story I'd written some eight years ago. Sixus1's Nyhloghast is really quite amazing.

Kroton Scouts - How I Did It...After posting my animation, Kroton Scouts:
I promised I'd do a write up on how I did it. This would be that.
It runs a bit long and there's… math, but it's fairly simple and you're obviously free to skip it - it's pretty obvious where the math parts are. And they probably won't hurt you.
